The top placegetters in Doubtless Bay Croquet Club's business house tournament were, from left: Neil Dodds, Marg Dodds, Phil Barber, Janette Beason, Julie Scott, Simone Dawson, Brenda Thompson.

The last Thursday in November was also the last night for the Doubtless Bay Croquet Club's annual business house competition.

Club spokesman Peter Hartnall noted teams arrived eager to score that convincing win and clinch the title although competition was good natured as always, with two sets of 13-hoop games played in idyllic weather.

At the conclusion Beryl Smith collected the scores and did the necessary calculations to find the top placegetters. Results from the final night were, round 5: Doubtless Bay Hire 7 Doubtless Bay Bridge 3, Whangaroa Golf 7 Taught'em 0, Professionals 7 Teach'em 1, Mangonui Mowers and Chainsaws 7 The Info Girls 4; round 6: Chainsaws 5 Bridge 3 Info Girls 7 Hire 5, Professionals 7 Taught'em 0, Golf 7 Teach' em 1.

The final results overall saw the Professionals emerge as this year's champions, with Mangonui Mowers and Chainsaws finishing runners-up and Doubtless Bay Hire in third place. Prizegiving followed and saw the awarding of prizes donated in part by various generous local sponsors, Hartnall noted.

"A social time then ensued over a shared variety of nibbles and eats contributed by all present, and some imbibed a little, maybe to celebrate a win or to console themselves after a loss!"

Beryl Smith concluded the evening by thanking all participants for their participation and hoped they would return for the next business house competition in March.

She also thanked all the club members who had made the competition possible whether by preparing the greens or helping out on the evenings etc. Hartnall then thanked Beryl, noting this competition was her 'baby' as she had been its driving force right from the start by phoning people to encourage them to take part, running the evenings and managing to obtain the sponsored prizes.

"She was rightly applauded by all present."
