Hokianga pigs will be heading for the hills this weekend.

Hokianga pigs will be heading for the hills this weekend.

It's that time of year when Hokianga pigs start getting nervous and head for the hills.

This weekend sees the 2017 Horeke Hunting Club competition, with thousands of dollars in cash and spot prizes up for grabs. Hunting starts at midnight Friday, with the final weigh-in at the Horeke Tavern at 2pm on Sunday.

Prizes include $500 for the heaviest and average weight boar, $300 for the longest tusk, and $150 for the heaviest mallard and longest pheasant tail.

DOC's Kauri Coast carp eradication programme will also award cash prizes for the invasive fish, including $100 for the heaviest koi carp and $200 for combined weight koi, while kids can win cash for bagging possums, ferrets, hedgehogs, rats, stoats, mice and magpies (the first 20 magpies in each age group get $5/bird).

Sunday's events for kids also include a heaviest tuna (eel) contest.
