The philosophy at Kaikohe's Pioneer Village focuses on understanding the past and inspiring the future by bringing history to life.
The aim is to encourage a sense of belonging and pride in the community, not least by maintaining a beautiful park-like setting, the ideal venue for weddings, family picnics andcorporate functions, and an unequalled learning environment for schools and teachers.
All that takes a good deal of voluntary input though, and after 40 years the Pioneer Village has reached a critical stage, with a desperate need for new committee members and volunteers.
"The dedication and passion of members of the past have left a legacy for the next generation and beyond, but the volunteer and members list has been rapidly decreasing due to age, illness, or many families moving on," Kelly van Gaalen said.
"The Pioneer Village is not just a collection of buildings, but a place where people can discover, engage with and celebrate the many diverse stories of our culture and people.

"Volunteers fill an essential role in communities, with plenty of work to do behind the scenes. We rely on volunteers to keep the village operating. Whether you are a tradesperson, handyman, like to potter in the garden or mow lawns, assist with front of house or administrative and marketing activities, cleaning or polishing buildings and exhibits, there are so many options.
"With the busy schedules of modern day life and work/family commitments, we would be happy with any time anyone is able to offer, from one hour a day, a week or month."
There was a particular need for guides, "the storytellers of tradition and history", who could add to the visitor experience.
Those who wanted to help but did not have time to give might consider becoming a financial member, Kelly added.
