Last year's guided snorkelling days were popular, and next week's are expected to be too.

Last year's guided snorkelling days were popular, and next week's are expected to be too.

Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) will host two free guided snorkelling days, at Tapotupotu and Maitai Bay, next week, to give locals and visitors alike the chance to learn how to snorkel and discover more about the marine environment.

The events have been organised in partnership with the Department of Conservation, and are funded by the Tindall Foundation and DoC Community Fund.

Monday will give participants the chance to explore the unique Tapotupotu estuary, getting up close to the mangroves to potentially see spotties, triple fins, nesting mussels and flounder.

Tuesday is the back-up day; register from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

Wednesday's underwater adventures will take in the rocky reef environment of Maitai Bay, home to nudibranch and a variety of reef fish, registration from 10am to 3pm.

Those who don't have their own snorkel gear will be welcome to borrow EMR's masks, snorkels, fins and wetsuits.

The events are recommended for everyone aged over five, although children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult beach observer.

Experienced guides and advanced safety procedures will be in place.

The events will depend on the sea conditions and postponements will be notified on the EMR's website (www.emr.org.nz) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/emr.mtsct).

EMR is also looking for experienced snorkellers to assist as volunteer guides.

To volunteer, or for more information about the free snorkelling days, email info@emr.org.nz or visit www.facebook.com/emr.mtsct.
