A Northland wood processing mill has been damaged in a blaze overnight.

Firefighters from five crews were called to the Juken New Zealand veneer mill in Kaitaia just after midnight.

Northern Fire Service shift manager Karen Larking said the large fire was contained to the site's boiler room after flames swept up an air duct from a machine.

The fire took an hour to bring under control.
