Fire breaks out overnight in Far North at Lake Ohia

Bulldozers are bring brought in to cut fire breaks after a blaze in a Far North lake gumland reserve.

Fire crews are still at Lake Ohia on the Karikari Peninsula after a fire broke out just before 12.30am.

Seven fire crews fought the blaze that stretched over a large area of native scrubland.

Fire Service northern communications manager Colin Underdown said the fire had been brought under control.

This morning a bulldozer would be brought into the remote area to cut fire breaks.

Underdown said the burned-out shell of a car had been found in the area but it was not clear if it started the blaze.

Lake Ohia was drained in the 1900s for gum digging. It is now an important habitat for rare ferns, mosses and orchards.
