NOSE TO TAIL: Daniel De Waal leads Shane Roycroft in the production grade racing at Taipa on Sunday.
There was a fiery end to the day's racing at Taipa Speedway on Sunday after the engine of Ray Dare caught fire while he was contesting the feature saloon all-in event.
Dare, known amongst his colleagues as 'He Who Dares', had taken an early lead and was being chased hardby Julie Graydon when the engine fire developed on the penultimate lap. Dare was forced to pull onto the centre field where flames could be seen billowing out from the bonnet scoop and wheel arch.
Fire extinguishers were quickly pointed at the source - a fuel leak and melting wiring - and soon had the fire under control, with an unhurt Dare helping to extinguish the flames.
Other highlights from the domestic meet saw Roy 'Inchman' Walker finish ahead of Dare in the three rounds of saloon racing earlier in the day as two other contenders, Randolf Urlich and Kyran Van Iperen, were plagued by mechanical issues and struggled to complete the races; while spectators were also treated to some hardcase driving throughout the three rounds of the ladies' saloon grade where the final result saw Graydon take three wins over Emma Dare.
Elsewhere, Craig and Daniel DeWaal brought their new Honda Integra production saloon out to play, although a VTEC malfunction meant the father and son were unable to get the car up to full power, thus allowing Rex Roycroft finish the day with three chequered flags in his Nissan Skyline.
The latter driver's nephew, Shane Roycroft, showed exceptional driving skills in the same Skyline in the final two rounds of the day.
The next race day at Taipa Speedway is sceduled for Sunday, December 7, getting under way at 1pm with the event's main drawcard being the battle for supremacy between saloon drivers, Walker and Dare when they clash again in their Chevrolet-powered beasts.
