New rules and regulations are coming into effect for manuka honey producers.

New rules and regulations are coming into effect for manuka honey producers.

Mānuka honey producers and consumers are being urged to have their say on whether strict requirements for mānuka honey exporters should also be applied to honey produced and sold in New Zealand.

A stringent scientific definition for New Zealand mānuka honey was introduced for exported honey in December last year.

The aim was to safeguard the industry from cowboy operators.

Agriculture and food safety minister Damien O'Connor said he was looking at options for mānuka honey produced and sold in New Zealand.

Submissions can be made to Manuka.Honey@mpi.govt.nz by 5pm, September 17.
