Peria School has celebrated its 2024 school year with a prizegiving at the school.
Principal Ariana Williams started off the proceedings with a warm welcome to all whānau who braved the rain at the recent school prizegiving.
“The academic excellence across the school with tamariki achieving personal and collective success.A strong commitment to the arts with students shining in music, visual arts, and creative expression,” Williams said.
“Throughout the year there was a deepened focus on key learning areas such as literacy and maths strengthened with teachers’ continuous professional learning.
“Engaging inquiry-based programmes where students explored our local area and heritage including visits to Waka Kupe Centre and our local Kauhanga Marae learning about local role models who inspire us with their achievements along with delving into local history and stories fostering pride in who we are and where we come from.
“Our whole school camp at the beginning of the year where students, parents and teaching staff build strong relationships and create lifelong memories.
“We featured on The Good Sorts programme along with local identity Marsh Fletcher showcasing the amazing mahi our school does and celebrating the power of kindness and community. These moments remind us of the values we hold dear - manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, ako and whakamanawanui."

Williams went on to say goodbye to some valued staff members who have contributed so much to the kura, being teachers Jo Hay, Dominique Unger and some support staff who are moving on to new journeys ahead. She then welcomed new staff starting in 2025 - Lisa Rapana who will be deputy principal, teaching Year 3/4 in Te Awa and Kahu Thomas who will be the Year 5/6 teacher in Te Moana.
Before prizegiving wound up, Whaea Frances spoke highly about each of her Year 8 students who were moving on. The school also heard heartfelt messages from a few of the students about their time at Peria School, how past and current staff, along fellow students helped make their time at Peria School all that it was. The event finished off with a shared lunch prepared by the school’s resident master chefs.
