Gardening tips

Māra Kai, the Kaitāia Community Garden, is hosting a volunteer day on Thursday from 8am to 10am for anybody keen to learn how to grow kai for the community and tips and tricks to get the best out of a garden. Beginners are welcome and people will need to bring some enthusiasm and be prepared to get grounded with Papatūānuku. The teaching garden is behind Te Hiku Connect, at 12 Puckey Ave.

Late shopping

The Kerikeri township will be open for a night of local shopping and festive fun on December 18. Shops will be open from 5pm to 7.30pm and there will be loads of entertainment, food, music, and giveaways. Entertainment is split across three “zones” and will include a sausage sizzle, youth buskers, face painting and food sampling. There will also be a fashion parade, carol singers and wearable arts.

Kaitāia’s Anō Anō Mend & Make is open every day this week to Friday for people to pop in with their mending or get creative with Christmas gifts. People can make their own Christmas presents and festive gifts in the lead-up to the big day to help ease those yuletide expenses. Anō Anō Mend & Make is on Bank St, opposite Peekaboo.

Farm safety

ACC and Safer Farms have launched a farm safety campaign to tackle the spike of injuries in summer. The campaign aims to remind everyone to “have a hmm” before visiting a farm or moving onto the next job. In 2024, ACC received more than 23,000 claims for injuries on farms, with a total recovery cost of about $120m.
