North fortunes up

Northland improved its fortunes with better-than-average house price increases (0.1% compared with a fall of 0.2% nationwide) and construction growth (16.9% v 11.2% nationwide) but remains behind in employment growth (0.4% v 0.5%) and retail sales (3.6% v 4.5%).
Battery vigilance
Insurance company AMI is urging Kiwis to be vigilant with lithium-ion battery charging, after finding 37% of battery-related insurance claims were from incidents that occurred while charging. The average cost of these claims was $33,000. Fire and Emergency spokesman Tom Ronaldson says while there is nothing inherently dangerous about lithium-ion batteries, they can be a fire hazard if they are damaged, mishandled or improperly disposed of. He says they should not be charged on soft surfaces, left plugged in for a long time nor disposed of in household rubbish.
