The Northland Regional Council has launched a new competition initiative aimed at reducing the spread of moth plant, a highly invasive pest plant throughout Taitokerau. The competition encourages individuals or teams to collect moth plant pods, vines and seedlings, with cash prizes up for grabs. The competition awards one pointper pod collected and three points for every vine/seedling with roots intact. Cash prizes include $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place, plus several Prezzy Card spot prizes are also available. To register visit www.nrc.govt.nz/mothplantcomp
Theatre nomination
The Kerikeri Theatre Company has been nominated for six Northern Area Performance Awards (Napta), which will soon be announced at the Auckland Crowne Plaza. The cast and crew from the Kerikeri Theatre Company will attend the gala on February 28. Their 2025 Black Box production of God of Carnage has been nominated for an unprecedented six Napta awards across several categories, including Best Play, three times for Best Lead Actor/Actress, Best Props, and Best Director. It is the first time a Black Box show has been nominated.
Settlement reached
Education Minister Erica Stanford has welcomed the successful conclusion of negotiations to renew the Primary Principals’ (NZEI Te Riu Roa) Collective Agreement (PPCA). On Tuesday, a ballot among members of the NZEI returned a majority vote to ratify the PPCA settlement, which covers around 1300 primary principals. Under the settlement terms, primary principals receive a cumulative 2.5% salary increase immediately, plus 2.1% in 12 months. The settlement introduces a $15,000 Curriculum Change Allowance paid over the term of the agreement to recognise their work to lead the implementation programme.
A section of Te Ahu Ahu Rd in Waimate North will be closed for up to four weeks, with a detour in place, while pavement rehabilitation works are carried out. About 500 metres of the road will be closed between State Highway 1 and Showgrounds Rd, with access available for residents and emergency services along the affected stretch. The work, which started on Monday, is being carried out on weekdays between 7.30am and 6pm, with a detour via Showgrounds Rd.
