Kiwi band The Beths have paused their trek for global domination for a quick eight-date tour home for summer and are playing at The Turner Centre in Kerikeri, on March 28.

Beths performing

Kiwi indie-pop outfit The Beths, who have won rave reviews around the globe for latest album Straight Line Was A Lie and powerful live performances, will play a sole Northland gig in Kerikeri in March. The Beths, led by singer/songwriter Liz Stokes, have toured the world for the past three months after last year’s album was released. The Beths are at The Turner Centre, on March 28, with tickets through iTicket or at the Turner Centre.

Bridge approach

An innovative approach from experts working on the Broadwood Road Bridge means traffic of all sizes can now use the span until maintenance work is finished. Last October, engineers restricted the bridge to vehicles under 26.4 tonnes, after routine inspections identified the need for work on its supporting structure. This mostly prevented trucks carrying goods along the bridge, which is a vital link along the Twin Coast Discovery Highway and sits 8.49km from Mangamuka Rd. However, the weight restriction has now been lifted. A collaborative effort has reduced the bridge’s two lanes to one, redirecting traffic down the centre. This allows traffic of all sizes to safely pass over the strongest part of the structure. While this is in place, a give way system will regulate traffic flow, and maximum speeds will drop from 60km/h to 30km/h.

Everyone has a story to tell and now the Far North’s raconteurs, chroniclers and conversationalists will get the chance to tell their tales at the Honey House Cafe behind the Stone Store, in Kerikeri. Inspired by storytelling events all over the world, Let’s Talk – Korero Mai will provide a platform and an audience for people wanting to share a yarn with others for the sheer pleasure of storytelling. The first of the six monthly-themed evenings kicks off on February 23 at 6pm and builds on the success of the popular book club nights at the Honey House last year.

Disaster fund

Far North residents in Bay of Islands-Whangaroa affected by last month’s severe weather event can apply for financial support through Te Tahua Toka Tū Moana – Mayoral Disaster Relief Fund. The fund has been activated in response to the January 21-22 weather event, which caused widespread damage across coastal and rural communities in the Far North. Those affected can apply on the Te Tahua Toka Tū Moana - Mayoral Disaster Relief Fund page, on the council’s website. Applications close on 5pm, Friday March 6. If you have questions, contact: recoverymanager@fndc.govt.nz.
