TRIPLE BILL: Showing Ike Tango batting in the softball.

Pops Bratz triumphed over the competition to take out the grand title at the Whanau Triple Challenge tournament at Lindvart Park on Saturday.

The event comprised three sports codes - fast pitch softball, mixed netball and a swimming relay (10 x 25m lengths freestyle of the Northland College pool). At the end of the day, the Pops Bratz whanau had dominated all three codes to secure the Te Kotahitanga Mo Ake Tonu Trophy, also known as the John and Kohu Tana Memorial, as overall champions.

The other three teams who contested the event this year were Takes 2 To Tango, Pole Benders and Try Hardz, said event spokesman Mel Rameka. He noted the turnout was a little down on the six to 10 teams initially hoped for. Still, a good crowd of supporters and participants of all ages from 13-55 years of age were in attendance including kids, parents and even grandparents; a turnout Rameka described as "beautiful".

The overcast conditions along with the odd shower and downpour were a blessing as this enabled everyone to keep cool throughout and did not hinder proceedings at any point.

"We all thoroughly enjoyed our day, heaps of fun and laughs and there was a good debrief of the day together at the after function and prizegiving at the Lindvart Park pavilion to finish."

Results were, Best and fairest team: Takes 2 to Tango; Brophy-Pene Johnstone whanau prize: Paris Rewiri (Pole Benders) and Komene Marino (Pops Bratz); Top athletes, female: Mikaela Tango Beazley (Takes 2 to Tango), male: Willy Paul (Pops Bratz); and Tournament MVP: Kap Rewiri (Pole Benders).

Thanks went out to tournament organisers Mel and Del Rameka, the Brophy-Pene Johnstone whanau for supporting and sponsoring the tournament, along with Kap and Ange Rewiri and Feron Rogers for all their support, commitment and help through the recent softball season. Also acknowledged were Maurice Rogers, the Tango whanau, Lawrence Hemara, Janie Tairua, Hikitia Wikaira, Aleisha Proctor and local sports legends, Taal and Cheryl Smith.
