AWAITING THE CHOPPER: Police at the scene of yesterday's crash between Herekino and Broadwood, waiting for the Northland Electricity rescue helicopter.

A 52-year-old woman died yesterday after a one-vehicle crash on State Highway 10, near the top of Kaeo Hill.

It appeared that the VW hatchback had veered on to gravel at the corner of Matauri Bay Link Road just before 7am, travelling along the shoulder for about 150m before crossing the centre line, crashing into a ditch and somersaulting.

The car came to rest on the bank with its nose in the ditch. Both the driver and her dog, a Jack Russell terrier that died at the scene, were thrown from the vehicle.

State Highway 10 was closed for almost four hours with traffic diverted via Matauri Bay and Matauri Bay Link roads, while the woman was stabilised by St John paramedics before being flown to Whangarei.

Her death, the second in the Far North in four days, took the Northland road toll for the year to 21. (A Taipa man died on Sunday when his car crashed off Duncan Road, east of Kaitaia).

The Whangarei-based police Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Constable Chip Adcock said he could not comment on the cause of the crash while the investigation was under way, but the woman had not been wearing a seat belt.

He urged drivers to take care, in particular by reducing speed, wearing safety belts and not drinking and driving, to ensure they could spend Christmas with their families.

"There have been too many fatalities already this year," he said.

It was the second serious crash on SH10 near Kaeo in less than a month. A 29-year-old Kaeo man died when his car rolled on November 21.

Meanwhile the female driver and male passenger of a car that crashed into a bank then a tree between Herekino and Broadwood late yesterday morning were both flown to Whangarei Hospital by rescue helicopter.

A police spokesman, who identified them only as local residents, said the woman had been assessed as status 3, while the passenger was status 2.

The passenger side of the car appeared to have borne the brunt of the impact.

The vehicle left the road on the left-hand side after crossing the Awaroa River Bridge, as it began to climb a hill and rounded a right-hand bend. The occupants were tended to by St John officers from Kaitaia, while a Kaitaia Fire Brigade crew set up a helicopter landing pad nearby.
