OPEN FIRE: Lindy 'Apples' Archer playing for the Fire Brigade and Phill Andresen, better known in the skateboarding circles, took part in the FNDA business house darts 6s tournament.

OPEN FIRE: Lindy 'Apples' Archer playing for the Fire Brigade and Phill Andresen, better known in the skateboarding circles, took part in the FNDA business house darts 6s tournament.

The Far North Darts Association began its annual post season sixes tournament last Wednesday evening and the first round saw about 11 new players taking to the boards along with the return of past players such as John Hunter.

FNDA spokesman Brian Steed noted 12 teams - made up of six players each - had signed up. The 6s will again be a relatively short competition, with teams split into two pools to play off over the next five weeks before the winners from each group square off to find the overall champion.

Noting year's event which will be played on Wednesday nights at the local RSA in a far more social contest than the recently completed winter league, Steed added Waipap had secured the services of a Nelson-based player, Doug George. Elsewhere, and the opening round saw only one 180 produced by Steve Doak: "Other teams will hope Steve eases up over the next four weeks."

Teams were also reminded to write down who hits the winning double in the pairs games as there is a trophy up for grabs in this context.

Results from August 19 were, Group A: Young Guns 9 Chiefs 6 (highest score 140 Allan Ujdur), Awanui 1 Waipap 14 (HS 140 John Proctor, highest finish 106 B Steed), Tinopai 2 Mussel Rock 13 (HS 160 Monte Pawa, HF 96 Denny Watling); Group B: Mussel Rock XL 11 Ngati Bitza.com 4 (HS 140 Rocky Manga), Kaitaia Club 2 The Park 13 (HS 180 S Doak, HF 125 Rawden Petricevich), RSA 12 Tu Meke 3 (HS 140 A Graham, HF 64 Calvin Thomas).

The draw for game 2 tomorrow, A: Mussel vs Guns, Waipap vs Tinopai, Chiefs vs Awanui, B: RSA v XL, Tu Meke vs Park, Bitza vs Kaitaia. In other news, the RSA have kicked off a four week businesshouse round made up of teams of non-players and there were some promising results from the opening night with the Fire Brigade and the Nurses already looking like strong contenders for this year's title.

"Dissapointment on the night for Mate Radich's team, Mat's Destroyers, who sadly were destroyed in both matches. More to come from this team though I suspect," concluded Steed.
