HOUHORA. A stunning day failed to attract a big field to Houhora on Sunday to contest the long-standing Mt Camel Trophy. In her last report for 2015, club captain Cynthia Shailes put the main reason behind only 13 members turning up to play the annual mixed drawn pairs event downto the festive season, noting everyone was either gradually leaving to go on holiday or preparing for families to arrive.
Eventually Cynthia, with Walter 'Cabby' Johnson, claimed the Mt Camel Trophy for 2015 with a combined score of 78 stableford points.
Shailes noted the trophy was donated by her parents, Russell and Hoana Hockley, and first played for in 1986 where it was deemed "fitting" that the winners were Hoana Hockley and Norm McDonald. Hoana with Cedric Parker won the event again in 1996, while another long-standing club stalwart whose name was etched on the the trophy was Waitangi Karaka in 2006, with M Harvey.
Back to the present day and top scores from last Sunday were: Cynthia Shailes 45 stablefords, Neil St George 42, Lennie Shailes 41, Russell Hockley 40, Ross Maclean 39, Brian King 34, Walter Johnson 33. Other prizes were: Nearest the pin: L Shailes and N St George, nearest the pin in two: L Shailes, and 2s for L Shailes and N St George, while birdies were claimed by Ann Mitchell on the 11th.
On behalf of the club, Shailes wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year and thanked all of those golfers who have supported the club events over the past 12 months and said she looked forward to seeing everyone again in 2016.
KAITAIA. A good turn out of 23 players contested the weekly twilight session in sunny but windy conditions at Ahipara last Friday.
In his report from the evening's play, Dave Frost noted the winning scores were as hot as the weather. Results: L Matthews 40 stablefords, R Brown 38, C Urlich 38, J Matthews 37, B Pureranga 34, D Frost 33, A Stephens 31, J Hincho 30.
There will be no twilight this Friday due to some players having other commitments on the day, but the event will be back up and running the following Friday, January 1, which Frost said represented a good way to start the year off. "Everyone is welcome to come and join in. Hope to see you all there, and to all the helpers, I hope you all have a good Christmas."
