Dave and Pam Roughton (far left and right respectively) congratulate Jean Huxtable, Hilton McCarthy and Liz Muru for winning the Wrathall Rosebowl at Cooper's Beach earlier this month.

Cooper's Beach Bowling Club officials were pleased to report a strong attendance by outside players at an open tournament recently.

In contrast to a previous open event which ended up being contested only by local players [ Far North clubs conspicuous by absence, February 14], the Wrathall Rosebowl on Tuesday, February 14, attracted 19 mixed triples teams including visitors from Far North RSA, Kaitaia Church Road, Oruru and Kerikeri joining the their host club counterparts.

It was also noted the rain which everyone in the Far North had been so desperately waiting for held off until after the completion of the Pam and Dave Roughton Open, allowing four games of 1 hour 15 minutes to be played with the results decided on wins, ends and points.

Top placegetters were, Jean Huxtable, Liz Muru, Hilton McCarthy (RSA) 4 wins, 23 ends, 58 points, 1; Robin Sheffield, Christine Hodren, Graeme Hodren (Keri) 3, 16, 39, 2; Jim Naylor, Eileen Pickard, Pam Naylor (Coop) 3, 24, 53, 3. The lucky draw prize was claimed by Ngaire Watts, Sue Smith, Lorraine Walter (Coop), while a special Valentine's Day raffle was won by Ross Hulme.

Organisers thanked Pam and Dave for their generous sponsorship and their work in the kitchen during the day to make sure everyone was adequately fed and watered.

Also acknowledged were the greens, bar, and match people. It was noted that, judging from the various comments overheard during play, both greens were playing well.

The club is now gearing up for its major tournament of the season, the Doubtless Bay Open, the annual mixed fours event being held this year from Tuesday to Thursday, March 28-30.
