Hoana Hockley Memorial Bowls Triples winners Pearl Tahana, Russell Hockley and Brian Bellas.

The Houhora Bowling Club was again able to celebrate the memory of its beloved late member, Hoana Hockey, holding the annual memorial triples tournament in her honour on Sunday, January 8.

Teams from Oruru, Cooper's Beach, Church Road, Kaitaia Combined, Far North RSA, Takapuna and host clubs contested this year's title.

Conditions of play were perfect from overcast for two games, to the wind getting up for the third, to beating sun on the fourth, as players bowled to a soundtrack of easy listening music before enjoying lunch and afternoon tea.

As always the Houhora Bowling Club members did an outstanding job hosting the event, while organisers gave many thanks again to everyone from the Hockley and Shailes family for helping run this year's tournament.

Winning the Hoana Hockley Memorial were Pearl Tahana, Russell Hockley (Hoana's husband) and Brian Bellas who came in with 4 wins, 31 ends and 61 points.

Runners-up Marty Doak, Cynthia Shailes (Hoana's daughter) and J Hodgson recorded 3, 26, 60, third placegetters were Mike Housham, R Leef and B Kinnear scoring 3, 20, 34, while fourth placegetters, G Settle, D Brake and J Malamatenios, finished with 3, 19, 48.

The event report noted a nice touch was that it would have been Hoana's 79th birthday but an old family friend Vera Hodgson, who shares the same birthday, was there and the family wished her well.
