A person is believed to be critically injured after being hit by a car in Northland.

Police were called to the crash between a car and a person at about 7.40am on Virtue Crescent at Tokerau Beach on the Karikari Peninsula.

"The initial indication is one person has been injured but we are waiting for more detail," a police spokeswoman said.
