Home advantage paid off for members of the hosting club at the Northland Residentials squash tournament in Kaitaia last weekend.

A report from the event noted 24 ladies and 28 men made the trek to Kaitaia for the weekend and there were some very hard-fought battles in many grades to find the champions.

Standouts as far as the local brigade were concerned included Ngature Stephens, along with mother and daughter, Tayla and Nirelle McDonald, all winning their respective championships.

The winners of the men's and women's divisions were as follows. A-grade: Finn Trimble and Sacha Pou-Tito, B grade: Darryn Gibbons and Zoe Dykzeul, C-grade - Ben Sweeney and Nirelle McDonald, D-grade: Ngature Stephens and Denese Gallagher, E-grade: Jeremy Waldegrave and Tayla McDonald, F-grade: Joanne Mason (the men's title uncontested), and, J-grade: Justin Tyson and Amy Brown.

Other top placings for Kaitaia players included Hongi Laing and Cindy Hassan finishing third in the B grade men's and women's events respectively, likewise Dave Palmer and Blair McDonald, who secured third placings overall in the D-grade and J-grade men's divisions respectively.

Elsewhere, congratulations went to the 2015 graded champs who have qualified to represent Northland at the champion of champions national tournament in Palmerston North at the end of October.

In other news, the Kaitaia C-grade ladies team played off against Manaia Squash Club in July and won the right to represent Northland in the 2015 SuperChamps national tournament in Taumaranui from September 15-19.
