Getting the local Dalmatian fraternity together for the annual fundraising pairs tournament led to rowdy night of indoor bowling for all at the Kaitaia Primary School hall last Thursday evening.

In his report on the event, local commentator Stephen Joyce said two things were certain whenever this crew were involved.

"A fun time and lots of good food. And so it was on Thursday night!"

With his customary irreverent joie de vivre, Joyce noted it was also appropriate that a Dally team eventually won, Bertha 'Raffa' Yerkovich and Steve Joycevich from the Karikari club securing top honours with three and a half wins out of four games. The runner up and third placings were claimed by Lynne Pooley and Janet Sole from the Mangonui club and Ivan Buselich and Helen Yuretich from Kaitaia respectively, both latter teams recording three wins.

"The only blemish on the winning team's record was a draw to a team skipped by my old nemesis, Mate Radich. And boy did he let me know it!" Joyce said all teams won a variety of prizes while the only team to suffer four losses was Clarence Thomas and Jacob Whaiapu.

"Clarence came second in the singles last week which lends weight to the old adage that sometimes you are the statue and sometimes you are the seagull. The raffle had a huge selection of prizes and was humorously run by Mate who had to make a public apology for using a naughty word after bowling a poor shot!

"Seeing as the evening was of Dally benefit, two stalwart members of the club have hung up their gloves. Mary Katavich and her husband Tony have retired from their respective official positions, Mary was secretary for 18 years and Tony was president for 17 years."

Joyce concluded his weekly round up from the Kaitaia indoor bowling scene saying both Mary and Tony were made life members at a recent ceremony.

"You both did terrific jobs over many years and we wish you all the best for the future. You both will be missed."
