The Real Housewives of Herekino - Michelle Hammond, Doolz Rawiri, Roberta McLean and Kelly Rawiri - had a long, hard battle to bring home a trophy which was first won by a team from their local pub 35 years ago.

The Herekino Housewives won the Far North Pool Association's Hen of the North women's team of four pool tournament at the Kauri Arms Tavern in Kaitaia on Sunday, giving them the big trophy and an $800 cash prize.

After 15 hours of play they beat the Kaitaia RSA team 4-3 after a team game to resolve a 3-3 deadlock following four games of singles and two of doubles.

With the tournament ending at 1am on Monday, it was a long day for all concerned.

"Three of us were first-time entrants to the competition and so are still on a buzz as our goal was to enter to just have fun," Michelle Hammond later told the Northland Age.

The tournament has been played since 1981 when Waipapakauri Hotel publican Mary Rae donated the trophy, won that year by the Herekino Tavern.

"We are the only Herekino team to win since then," Michelle Hammond said.

Eleven teams played in this year's tournament, with the hosts running a plate round for the first-round losers.
