Pilot whales off Tutukaka Coast

A pod of about 50 pilot whales that came perilously close to Whangarei's coast this week is not believed to be part of the two pods that stranded on beaches in the Far North earlier this year. Northland orca expert Ingrid Visser and two volunteers rushed into action after reports a large pod of pilot whales was heading towards the shore between Tutukaka and the Poor Knights Islands. Dr Visser, Samantha Hale and Leonie Mahlke caught up with the pilot whales. PICTURES from ORCA RESEARCH TRUST
