Thousands of people packed into Moerewa's Otiria Marae for Ngati Hine's Te Ahuareka Festival, a two-day, biennial celebration of the reo and culture of the Mid North tribe. On Friday schoolchildren from around the rohe (tribal area) took to the stage to show off their kapa haka skills; on Saturday it was the adults' turn, along with hiphop dancers, singers and classical musicians.

About 75 crews took part in the BP Surf Rescue North Island IRB Championships at Waipu Cove on February 10 and 11, where sunshine and medium-sized waves made for a great event.
