Whale stranding at Karikari

An epic rescue mission to save the survivors of a mass stranding of pilot whales on Karikari Beach ended with nine of the animals last seen swimming strongly out to sea. Thirteen whales were released at Maitai Bay, 30 hours after the alarm was raised over a pod of 58 pilot whales, from young calves to fully-grown adults, stranded on the Karikari Peninsula.
