Twenty-four first-time fighters put their bodies on the line for a good cause in the Fighting Cancer boxing tournament at the Turner Centre in Kerikeri on September 22. The Certified Builders Association event raised more than $8000 for a cancer charity and featured Northland identities such as ITM Fishing Show star Matt Watson, St John paramedic Nick Scott and Kawakawa's burly top cop Nathan Davis - but the judges said the best fight of the night was the match-up between Mangamuka farmer Rachael MacCarthy and Kerikeri gym trainer Leah-May Morrow. About 75 crews took part in the BP Surf Rescue North Island IRB Championships at Waipu Cove on February 10 and 11, where sunshine and medium-sized waves made for a great event.
