Over 130,000 rounds were expended on Sunday to decide the Northland Open Super-Air title Paintball title at Mangapai.

Auckland team ADHD won the eight-team competition, beating Disposal Unit in the final with the defending champions TPC Blast, who had had been the top qualifiers finished third.

Whale stranding at Karikari

An epic rescue mission to save the survivors of a mass stranding of pilot whales on Karikari Beach ended with nine of the animals last seen swimming strongly out to sea. Thirteen whales were released at Maitai Bay, 30 hours after the alarm was raised over a pod of 58 pilot whales, from young calves to fully-grown adults, stranded on the Karikari Peninsula.

Age was no barrier to victory in Friday night's Kerikeri Christmas parade, when Kerikeri Retirement Village captured the prize for best community float with a van, mobility scooters and wheelchairs decked out in summer theme. Parade marshal Jim Phillips, of the Kerikeri Lions Club, said the tally of 35 floats was down on 2009, but that was more than made up for by the higher quality of entries this year.

Pilot whales off Tutukaka Coast

A pod of about 50 pilot whales that came perilously close to Whangarei's coast this week is not believed to be part of the two pods that stranded on beaches in the Far North earlier this year. Northland orca expert Ingrid Visser and two volunteers rushed into action after reports a large pod of pilot whales was heading towards the shore between Tutukaka and the Poor Knights Islands. An estimated 13,000 people packed into Waimate North's showgrounds for the Bay of Islands Pastoral and Industrial Show on Saturday, the biggest turnout of recent years. At 168 years old, just two years younger than the Treaty of Waitangi, it's easily the country's oldest country show - and it's showing no signs of slowing down. The Duke turns 170

The Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell celebrated two milestones on Saturday night - 170 years since New Zealand's first liquor licence was issued on October 30, 1840, and the first stage of a major revamp by its new owners. The guest list included Duke staff from as far back as the 1950s, former All Black and Samoa rep Dylan Mika and former Northland captain John Campbell. Peter de Graaf joined the party.
