An epic rescue mission to save the survivors of a mass stranding of pilot whales on Karikari Beach ended with nine of the animals last seen swimming strongly out to sea. Thirteen whales were released at Maitai Bay, 30 hours after the alarm was raised over a pod of 58 pilot whales, from young calves to fully-grown adults, stranded on the Karikari Peninsula.
Whale expert Ingrid Visser along with two other members of the Orca Research Trust - Samantha J Hale and Leonie Mahlke - were treated to an awesome experience when they spotted a Blue Whale and her calf off Northland.

Age was no barrier to victory in Friday night's Kerikeri Christmas parade, when Kerikeri Retirement Village captured the prize for best community float with a van, mobility scooters and wheelchairs decked out in summer theme. Parade marshal Jim Phillips, of the Kerikeri Lions Club, said the tally of 35 floats was down on 2009, but that was more than made up for by the higher quality of entries this year.

The Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell celebrated two milestones on Saturday night - 170 years since New Zealand's first liquor licence was issued on October 30, 1840, and the first stage of a major revamp by its new owners. The guest list included Duke staff from as far back as the 1950s, former All Black and Samoa rep Dylan Mika and former Northland captain John Campbell. Peter de Graaf joined the party.
