A typical Northland downpour drenched the region on December 15. Northern Advocate Editor Craig Cooper was out on the roads and documents his trip from Kerikeri towards Whangarei on State Highway 1. reporter Peter de Graaf headed to Kaeo.

Jan Ward and Blair Glentworth chose Cleopatra of the Nile as their theme for the Paihia Christmas parade, building a Nile boat in pharaonic colours of blue and gold, and a pyramid complete with a bandage-wrapped mummy. The float was accompanied by dancing girls in skimpy togas and pulled by palace slaves in black body paint. It took a month to make the costumes for the 26 people who manned the float

Kaeo's Christmas parade might not be Northland's biggest or grandest - but how many other parades are followed by a carnival and a free concert by one of the country's top reggae bands? Hundreds of Whangaroa locals followed the floats down Leigh St, featuring a pipe band, circus performers, the odd monster, waka on wheels, decorated strollers and scooters, an army of elves and the big man himself with a sack full of sweets. ictures by Peter de Graaf.

About 30 floats paraded through the main street of Kamo for the annual Christmas parade.

About 800 swimmers between the ages of 6 and 81 took the plunge in a variety of swimming events in the Russell to Paihia swim.
