Tangi for William 'Bill' Pitman, Ngunguru Marae
The Mid North's top marae are again doing battle in the Marae Master Cookoff. Inspired by the TV series MasterChef, the Te Hau Ora o Kaikohe-organised event sees six marae compete to do the best job of hosting a group of kuia and kaumatua for lunch. The guests are also the judges, rating each of the six marae lunches on taste, health and presentation. Peter de Graaf was there as the newly opened Kohewhata Marae, just south of Kaikohe, made its bid for cookoff glory.
You just never know what's going to turn up on an afternoon fishing off the Northland coast as Whangarei fisher Neville Pattinson and a friend found out when they were treated to an hour-long display by two Humpback whales off Whangamumu, south of Cape Brett
Seven schools from across Northland took part in one massive night of youth creativity and expression. The Whangarei show was held at Forum North and ‘wowed’ the audience with a spectacular display of youth talent. Photographer Ron Burgin was there.

Whangarei went double-Dutch for a day as close to 2000 people turned up at the Quarry Arts Centre on May 5 for the city's second Holland Festival. Northland's version of the Queen's Day street party, which sees up to a million revellers pack the streets of Amsterdam, is now set to become an annual event. Peter de Graaf captured the action.

Kaitaia's Te Ahu Centre will become a national icon, Far North Mayor Wayne Brown says. The $14 million Te Ahu Centre was officially opened by Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae in a ceremony acknowledging the district's Maori, Pakeha and Dalmatian roots. The complex, built with about $8.5 million of ratepayer money, incorporates a library, i-Site, museum, council service centre, community hall, theatre, cafe and public spaces.
