Kaeo marked the festive season with the town’s annual Christmas parade and festival, starting with a convoy of floats — including a flock of schoolchildren dressed as sheep, colourful taniwha and a bunch of pirates, all led by the Piriwiritua Ratana Band — down State Highway 10 to Whangaroa College. There Santa arrived on a vintage truck, stalls selling chowder and oyster fritters kept the crowd’s hunger at bay, and Matauri Bay School’s kapa haka group and covers band Rock Salad kept them entertained.
