9.30am:
Motorists are being urged to avoid State Highway 11 between Kawakawa and Opua after a large slip blocked part of the road overnight.
The Kawakawa Fire Brigade was called out at 5.30am this morning after a driver came across the slip.
As well as a large amount of soil it had brought down an old tree stump, blocking one lane.
Volunteer firefighters managed traffic until roading contractors arrived.
Kawakawa fire chief Wayne Martin said there were concerns initially that the slip was still moving and it might be necessary to close both lanes, but when daylight came it was deemed to be safe.
Traffic is being allowed though one direction at a time.
It was not known this morning when the slip will be cleared or if that will require closing both lanes.
