Not many people order 35,000 red blooms at a time but it's an annual event for Colleen Towgood who coordinates Whangarei RSA's Poppy Day.
She and her husband Brian Towgood - he is an army veteran who saw active service in Malaya and Borneo - have a houseful of the evocative symbols of New Zealand and Australian service people's bond through war.
It is more a whole Poppy Week than a day, with seven days of events leading up to Anzac Day, on Tuesday April 25 - but the big cash builder for RSA and similar armed forces associations around New Zealand is tomorrow.
''I usually try to have at least 35,000 poppies. Hopefully Towgood be left with a couple of thousand to put toward the next year, but I'll order 35,000 again anyway,'' Mrs Towgood said.
She is a trustee of the RSA's welfare trust that supports members and their partners. Medical and life quality assistance Poppy Day donations help toward include cataract operations, hearing aids, dental work and glasses.
