The Hawke's Bay Magpies are looking forward to more quality time with New Zealand's most senior rugby referee, Chris Pollock, who is stepping out of the glare of the international arena.
"Polly worked his way to the top and has done an exceptional job," Magpies assistant coach Danny Lee said last night.
The 43-year-old has returned to fulltime teaching in the Bay.
"He's very passionate about the game and where it's heading and his contribution has been top class," said Lee, after the Magpies who held on to the Ranfurly Shield for most part of last season and have gained promotion to the top-tier premiership next winter in the ITM Cup competition.
Lee said Pollock's propensity to make himself accessible at trainings to edify both coaches and players over the years was immense.
"To catch that at a drop of the hat was just fantastic."
New Zealand Rugby general manager rugby Neil Sorensen acknowledged the contribution the 22-test veteran referee had made to New Zealand and international refereeing.
"Chris has given a huge amount to this game both at the provincial and international level.
This year, he was our most experienced referee on the field with 192 first-class matches to his name, including the 22 international tests, two Rugby World Cup tournaments, 70 Super Rugby matches, and nine Ranfurly Shield challenges," Sorenson said.
"We hope he will continue to be involved in rugby and share his knowledge and experience with up-and-coming referees, both at the provincial and national level," he said.
