Cricket

Pressure is fertile soil from which good cricketers grow.

That’s what Grace Levy, Liam Barbier and the rest of the Bollywood Stars bowlers proved on Wednesday night, holding it all together to beat High School Old Boys Pups by 21 runs.

Round 2 of the T15 league at Nelson Park also saw all-rounder Te Reimana Gray hit the winning runs in Eastland Broncos’ thrilling one-wicket win Auto Tyre Eagles: victory by one wicket.

Pups captain Blake Marshall won the toss on ground 4 and chose to bowl.

The Stars made 126-3, captain and No.4 batsman Liam Spring making 42 retired.

First-drop Kellann Bryant (24 off 32 balls) batted superbly, maintaining his technique and maturity where many players of his age slog themselves out.

Opener Henry Watson scored 19 off 22 before being caught by Marshall off the bowling of promising seamer John Broad (1-16 in three overs).

In the Pups’ reply, Luke Fisher (32) and Max Briant (27) retired.

No.4 Jack Whitehead-McKay was left not out on six when Stars leg-spinner Barbier (1-25 off 3) had Marshall caught by Levy at square leg for 20 from the last ball of the game.

Northern Districts A representative Knight (0-18 off 3) set a good example for Y8 Levy, who proved the most accurate of the bowlers.

Bowling at good pace, Levy conceded only 15 runs in three overs against players of the experience of Briant and Marshall with the match at stake.

The Broncos, after winning the toss, bowled the Eagles out for 76 in 12.4 overs.

DJ Penfold made 19 at No.8 and Travis O’Rourke 10 not out at 9.

Cohen Loffler (3-8 off 3), Luke Hurlstone (2-3 off 1) and Gray (2-6 off 2.4) bowled cleverly and consistently for the Broncos.

Nathan Trowell (16) and Gray (15) were the Broncos’ leading run-scorers in their chase.

Dylan O’Rourke proved an excellent foil for paceman Peter Reynolds (0-6 off 1).

O’Rourke took 1-2 off 1 while Penfold claimed (2-2 off 1), Jarrod Ormiston (2-1 off 1) and fellow left-armer Tama Holden (1-18 off 1) gave the Eagles’ bowling attack a second row of teeth.

“We bowled and fielded exceptionally well then made life hard for ourselves with the bat,- but overall we played well,” said winning skipper Loffler.
