Against Paikea, the students came back from being 2-1 down with 10 minutes to play. Two late goals gave them the win.
The Ngatapa result shows how Girls’ High have become a team prepared to compete hard in the top-five competition.
Ngahuia Wilson slotted a good goal for Girls’ High early in the match and they dominated for much of the game.
It was not until midway through the final quarter that Ngatapa were able to equalise.
Gisborne Boys’ High School bounced back in style to nail LOB Masters 5-1.
The writing was on the wall when the students led 4-0 by halftime, although a 1-1 second half was some consolation to the older boys.
THC continued on their unbeaten way with a 6-2 victory over LOB B.
The winners were not quite as dominant as expected, and LOB B deserve credit for the way they kept themselves in the contest.
THC strikers Tamanay Tuhou and Hanoa Morete scored hat-tricks.
YMP A defeated Paikea 6-1 in the women’s competition. The scoreline did not reflect how well Paikea played.
YMP piled on the goals in the second quarter to lead comfortably at halftime, but Paikea refused to lie down.
Courtney Onekawa scored three of the YMP goals.
GMC Green were too classy for Ngatapa, and won their match 5-1.
It was 1-1 at halftime but in the second half the Green Machine got their game going and took charge.
The result shows again what a force they will be at the business end of the season.
Te Aowera tried hard against GMC Kowhai but Kowhai won 5-0 to remain undefeated in the bottom-four women’s division.
The remaining match, between YMP B and GMC Gold, was an entertaining 4-2 win for the YMP women.
