THE top YMP men's team produced the senior hockey result of the weekend with a win against arch-rivals Lytton Old Boys.

In the women's matches, Paikea's victory over Girls' High was the hardest-fought contest.

YMP A defeated the other previously unbeaten men's team, LOB HPY Advisors, 4-2 in a thrilling encounter.

“It was a fast-paced game,” hockey commentator Tony Scragg said.

“LOB scored first and YMP replied pretty quickly in the first quarter, then in the second quarter YMP scored, and LOB replied to make it 2-2 at halftime.

“It stayed like that for a good period of the third quarter, then YMP got their third goal to take the edge, and on the final hooter they got a penalty corner to score their fourth.

“Both sides were pleased to play some really close and competitive hockey.

“It won't be the last time we see that happen between them this season.”

Paikea edged Amber Dental Gisborne Girls' High School 4-3.

“Paikea were up by two goals early on, and looked like they'd cruise to an easy victory,” Scragg said.

“But credit to Girls' High, who replied with a goal of their own to keep the pressure on.

“Paikea were up 4-2 before Girls' High staged a late comeback to get a third goal, but they left their run too late.

“Girls' High coach Henry Mulligan would have been impressed by the marked improvement in the performance of his girls.”

GMC Kowhai went back to back with another win, beating Te Aowera 5-2 on Thursday night.

“It was great to see seven goals scored in that match, and for TA to get two of them. Credit to Kowhai, though. They've won two games in a row now.”

INA Contracting GMC Green followed on from their win against YMP A in the women's competition the previous weekend with a solid 16-0 win against Waituhi.

“The Green Machine showed what a dominant force they are this season,” Scragg said.

“It was good to see the goals shared around too.”

YMP A rebounded from the loss to GMC by scoring 15 unanswered goals in the clash with their B team.

Nancy Tarawa scored four, and Courtney Onekawa and Grace Kuil added a hat-trick each.

“That was a good way for YMP to respond to their loss,” Scragg said.

“It's another warning to the competition that they are still in the mix.”

In the men's matches, Waituhi accounted for LOB Masters in style, winning 12-1, with four goals each to Matty Waikari and Tei Mohi.

“It was good to see Waituhi link together some good combinations,” Scragg said.

“That's the best I've seen them play so far this season.

“Well done to Campion College teacher Matt King, who scored the Masters' first goal of the season.”

Gisborne Boys' High defeated YMP B by default.
