YMP A made it three wins from three games against arch-rivals Lytton Old Boys in their hockey semifinal on Friday night to advance straight through to the men's championship final.

In another big result, the YMP women scored a psychological boost ahead of their sudden-death matches this weekend when they defeated previously unbeaten INA Contracting GMC Green 2-1 on Saturday evening.

HPY Advisors LOB will face Waituhi this weekend for the right to join YMP A in the men's top-three final.

“YMP beat LOB 3-1 on Friday night, so at least LOB can see that the scoreline is tightening up a bit,” hockey commentator Tony Scragg said.

“But I think YMP should still be considered the dominant side.”

Lytton Old Boys scored first on Friday, which would have been a confidence boost for them.

YMP equalised at the start of the second quarter.

“It took two late goals for YMP to take the victory,” Scragg said.

“LOB will need to sharpen their attack if they want to have a shot at the championship.”

In the women's games, the Green Machine and YMP A fought out an enthralling game on the Hain Farming Turf on Saturday evening to finish the weekend's play.

“That 2-1 win to YMP A levelled the ledger between these teams,” Scragg said.

“That's a win apiece this season.

“Mentally for YMP, the victory would have been fantastic for them, and perhaps GMC having this loss and in recent weeks a draw could suggest the tide might have turned.”

In the other men's playoff game, Gisborne Boys' High School trounced LOB Masters 12-1.

“The scoreline blew out,” Scragg said.

“The Masters had only nine players and struggled to keep up with the students.

“Credit to John Broad for his five goals. but really it was a good team effort by Boys' High.

“They will be hard to beat in the bottom-three men's final.”

In the other top-four women's match, Paikea shared the points with Ben Holden Fencing Ngatapa.

“For me, it was the game of the weekend, with three goals to each team,” Scragg said.

“Ngatapa led 2-0 going into the last quarter but Paikea replied with three goals in a row.

“Ngatapa tied it up right on the final whistle with their third goal.”

In a catch-up game last week, Te Aowera grabbed their first win of the season when they beat Waituhi 4-0. Lillian Hema and Arahia Nepia scored two goals each.

“Well done TA; they deserve that result,” Scragg said.

“That's so typical of them. At the business end of the season they can make it count in the games that matter.

“But Te Aowera could not repeat their success when they played GMC Kowhai on Thursday night. They lost 1-0.

“That result kept Kowhai in the lead in the women's bottom five.”
