Glenys Whiteman and Boon McIlroy were the only pair to win all eight of their games in the Val Smith 2-4-2 Mixed Pairs Tournament played at Poverty Bay and Gisborne bowling clubs.

Trevor Mills presented the Evelyn Mills Memorial Trophy to Whiteman and McIlroy as winners of this popular annual tournament, which is organised by Poverty Bay Bowling Club with support from the Gisborne club.

Players were divided into two sections and played alternate days at each club. This meant all pairs played four 90-minute games on grass greens at Gisborne and four on the artificial turf at Poverty Bay.

Winners were decided on game points, two for a win and one for a draw, and — if teams were equal on points — by differentials.

The number of teams taking part — 27 — was seven more than last year.

Prizes were presented to first, second and third placegetters in each section and first, second and third overall.

Anna Colvin, representing one of the sponsors, Colvins Ltd, presented the prizes to the Section 1 winners. First were Whiteman and McIlroy, second were July Hoepo and Karen Pinn, and third were Tim and Ginny Sherriff.

Jane Smith, sales adviser for Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village, presented the prizes for Section 2. The winners were Carol Hawes and George Tamihana, second were Marcus and Jasmine Merrick, and third were Ben Elkington and Marilyn Knowles.

In second place overall were Hoepo and Pinn, and third overall were Tim and Ginny Sherriff.

Before the prize-giving, players socialised and enjoyed the food provided at Poverty Bay Bowling Club. Norma Miller, one of the tournament controllers, thanked those who organised events such as this, including those who prepared the draw and the greens, did the umpiring, helped prepare food and worked in the kitchen and on the bar.
