A weekend of waveski surfing action is in the line-up for Gisborne from tomorrow.
With the arrival of cyclone-generated ocean swell, with big gaps between sets, ideal conditions are expected for the Turanganui open waveski surfing championships on Sunday.
The championships start at 7am, Sunday, at Makorori Beach or Whales
at Wainui Beach. As sponsors of the Gisborne championship, Wainui Store will also host the prize-giving on Sunday afternoon. The Gisborne championship event is a prelude to the New Zealand championships in March.
An opportunity to have-a-go is open to all at Waikanae Beach tomorrow from 9am to noon while an adaptive surfing event will be held at Waikanae from noon. The adaptive session gives people in wheelchairs, or with injuries, the opportunity to compete in the sport, says Turanganui Waveski Surfing Club contest director Steve Gibbs.
“The world waveski adaptive championships were held in California last year. We have got people in New Zealand who are keen to get adaptive surfing going here. It opens the door to people who have had injuries but want the chance to get back into the water.”
