And how warm was the water? It seemed to almost change daily but surfing on Tuesday evening was magical. I was sweating in my steamer but marvelling at the glassy conditions and crystal clear ocean. This is how summer ought to be.
The good news is there does not look like an off switch for this run of swell, with a solid pulse on Sunday, lingering into Monday and potentially being backed up with another push from the southeast next week.
The only dilemma will be the winds, which are forecast to be light but variable, with potential for moderate onshores at times.
Looking out even further there should be a decent south swell making its way up the Coast come Christmas, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.

There should be a window of decent waves in the morning, and who knows, maybe they will luck out and the wind will stay light through the day.
For those eager to venture out of town for a “paddle battle”, the final of New Zealand Surfing Series, the Backdoor BayBash, is on over the weekend in Hawke’s Bay.
With a building two-metre swell peaking Sunday afternoon, there is a good chance they will be at Te Awanga.
