GISBORNE paddlers brought home a string of top placings from the Waka Ama New Zealand Long Distance Nationals in Hawke’s Bay over the weekend.

In the individual races, Rodney Hibbert, of Horouta, won the golden master men’s 16-kilometre ruddered race, and Raipoia Bightwell, paddling for Ruamata, won the golden women’s rudderless race over the same distance. Cory Campbell (Hor) won the 10km rudderless race in the Junior 19 women.

In the W6 (six-place) events, Daddy Heli’s (Hor) won the Junior 19 men’s 16km, Hinetoa (Hor) won the Junior 19 women’s 16km race, Tairawhiti (Mareikura) won the master mixed 28km and Ikahoea (Hor) won the senior master mixed 28km.

Junior 19 men, W1 10km (rudderless): Zane Kingi Abraham (Hor) 1:01:29, 3rd; Ducati Walford-Collier (Hor) 1:01:41, 4th; Maia Fox (Hor) 1:07:58, 8th.

Master men, W1 16km (rudderless): Grant Donaldson (Hor) 1:32:32, 2nd.

Master men, W2 16km: Tairawhiti (Mareikura) 1:34:21, 2nd.

Senior master men, W1 16km (rudderless): Pryor Brightwell (Mareikura) 2:01:23, 9th.

Golden master men, W1 16km (ruddered): Rodney Hibbert (Hor) 1:46:31, 1st.
