“Waikohu started strongly and showed their determination to win. They pressured the HSOG ball-carriers to create turnovers.
“They edged ahead, maintained their lead and finished strongly by pulling away in the last couple of minutes.”
Beale said there were some good match-ups where opposing players had to use different strategies to collect or send passes.
“The notable match-ups were between Waikohu goal attack Arahia Ruru and HSOG goal defence Alex Sinclair, and between the centres, Natalie Walford of Waikohu and Katie Kirkpatrick of HSOG.”
Waikohu coach Cheryl Te Rito was rapt with the win.
“The girls played so well, and our reserves contributed, too, when they came on,” she said.
“The team played their own game, and played with control.
“That's our best result of the season so far. I thought Whangara was a good result — to lose to them by only one goal — but this is much better.”
YMP Sunshine Brewing were tested by Ritana Senior A in a tight contest.
The table-toppers won it 29-23.
“It was close for most of the game, and both teams gave a good display of netball skills,” Beale said.
“YMP had a slim lead all the way, just a couple of goals, but in the last few minutes Ritana succumbed to the pressure, made little errors and let their chance of a win slip away.
“Both teams' defences worked together well and made the opposing attackers be patient in passing the ball around until their shooters were in a better position.”
Whangara Old Girls held on by the skin of their teeth against a determined Gisborne Girls' High School Senior A, winning 23-22.
“The students had their chances to win and led for the first three quarters, but it slipped away from them in the last couple of minutes,” Beale said.
“There was more urgency in the students' play and they worked together through the court on attack and defence.
“Whangara made changes in each quarter, but only edged ahead in the last minute.”
In the final premier-grade match, High School Old Girls overpowered Horouta Gold 31-15.
“HSOG had control of this game and powered away in the last quarter,” Beale said.
