Gisborne surfer Saffi Vette has been doing her bit for the New Zealand cause at the Vissla ISA World Junior Surfing Championships at Huntington Beach, California.

The Kiwi effort has been led by Whakatane surfer Jack Lee, who advanced into the final 16 in the main round of the event.

He posted an 11.0-point heat total to advance alongside American Taro Watanabe.

Meanwhile, Vette and Estella Hungerford (Christchurch) fought back in the repechage rounds of the under-18 girls’ division to keep their hopes alive.

Vette won her second-round match-up. Although she thought she could have done better, she said it was a long event “so you have to save some of your best surfing for last”.

Her heat strategy had stayed the same, even though she was in the repechage rounds.

“I am just focusing on the waves before my heat and sticking to certain landmarks. To keep going deep into the event, I need to stay confident, and well-rested, too.”

Vette has a day off today.
