Day 6 of the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship kicked off with the Kiwis grinding out more repechage heats in El Salvador.
Gisborne’s Finn Vette was the sole New Zealand surfer in the under-18 boys’ repechage yesterday and had a great heat in the challenging conditions of La Bocana.
His
first wave was a bigger running left-hander on which he did two good turns and a close-out snap on paddling back out with 17 minutes remaining and a first score of 3.90. A few minutes later he took off on another left starting off with a powerful snap and a wrapping carve before the wave shut down, leaving him with a 3.37-point ride.
On his heat strategy, Finn said: “I wanted to keep things simple and get bus.”
And get busy he did. Leading the heat and with 15 minutes to go he hunted down a bigger left-hander and unleashed three powerful turns and improved his back-up with a 5.67.
