Saffi Vette has advanced through the first round of the Phillip Island Pro in her journey towards earning a World Surf League Championship Tour spot.
Surfing in the final heat yesterday, Gisborne’s Vette scored the third-highest total of the day — 13.05.
In a small and messy swell, competitors struggled
to put big totals on the board. Alysse Cooper’s 15.40 was the highest heat score of the day.
As the only Kiwi in the field, Vette is aiming to finish in the top eight surfers to earn herself a spot on the next tier up, the Challenger Series.
If she were to qualify for the Challenger Series, Vette would travel to some of the most famous surf breaks — including New Zealand’s Piha — for a series of eight events in the second half of the year.
