Charlie Ure’s team went through round-robin play unbeaten to claim the annual Peace Shield Men’s Open Fours title on the Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s greens last weekend.
Ure and his Gisborne club team of Robin Jefferson (3), Ricky Miller (2) and Mark Walker (lead) beat three other teams in the
contest for one of Bowls Gisborne-East Coast Centre’s most prestigious trophies.
Ure’s team had three wins for six points and a differential of plus-16.
Another Gisborne club team — Bob McIlroy (s), Geoff Pinn (3) and 10-year-old twins Kyle Pinn (2) and Liam Pinn (l) — won the Allan G. Slight Memorial Shield as runners-up. They had two wins, which gave them four points and a differential of minus-7.
This is the second year that experienced senior bowler McIlroy has taken Geoff Pinn and his twin boys Kyle and Liam into this centre tournament. McIlroy said Kyle and Liam (second-year bowlers) reminded him of his children when they started bowling at the same age.
