“The important thing is to get back to winning. We were disappointed with the draw last week but Thistle played really well, especially in the first half.
“They came out with a good plan and it worked but I was proud of the way we fought back and maybe could have won it in the second half.
“Dane Thompson, who is having a good season, hit a couple of screamers that Baps (goalkeeper Mark Baple) saved. Against any other keeper, they probably would have gone in.”
Adams said Thompson, who joined United from Thistle at the start of this season, had become a key player in midfield for United.
“He’s skilful, good in the air and has chipped in with a couple of goals. He’s also a good team man.”
As well as three points, also at stake will be the Challenge Cup, contested in every home game of the holders.
Gisborne Thistle are away to Maycenvale United tomorrow.
Coach Garrett Blair said he was happy with the way his side played last week.
“We are starting to implement our tactical set-up much better and it’s starting to pay off,” he said.
Blair didn’t know much about Maycenvale, except that they lost 3-1 to Havelock North Wanderers Seconds, which was an “interesting” result.
Havelock showed a lot of improvement on their 13-1 loss to Thistle when they lost 5-2 to United a fortnight ago. At home, they could have had a few first-team players.
Blair said Thistle would have a strong squad for the trip. Defender Liam Ryan was back, although striker Jake Theron had a hamstring injury, midfielder Olly Tilley was away and Cole Devonport was recovering from concussion.
He was considering pushing Ander Batarrita from leftback into a defensive midfield role, and Davie Ure from attacking midfield to striker.
“I expect our midfield three of Max Logan, Nicky Land and Ander to be key this weekend,” Blair said.
“We overloaded the midfield to great effect last weekend and will look to do that again.”
