Gisborne United right-winger Jacob Adams tries to get past Napier Marist midfielder Rueben Thurston in a Central Federation Cup game at Harry Barker Reserve yesterday.

Pacific Premiership pacesetters Marist beat Eastern League leaders Heavy Equipment Services United 2-1 in a thriller. Marist striker Mustafa Can, originally from Turkey but a member of Team Taranaki for seven years and now in his fifth season in Hawke’s Bay football, scored two outstanding goals.

The first was a 30-metre drive that gave United goalkeeper Andy McIntosh no chance.

The second was a head-flick of Jett Hogg’s accurate chip in behind the United defence to make the score 2-1.

United had equalised when Marist centreback Yeshil Naiker did not get enough power into his header back towards his goalkeeper Alex Schroder, and United player-coach Josh Adams nipped in to score.
