Malcolm Trowell and Steve Goldsbury won the Bowls Gisborne-East Coast centre men's pairs held on the Poverty Bay club's greens.

Gisborne club pair Trowell (skip) and Goldsbury beat Omarunui Bowling Club's Trevor Murtha (s) and Maurice Williams 20-9 in the final.

Seventeen teams entered the men's competition — six from Gisborne Bowling Club, four from Kahutia, two from Tolaga Bay, three from Poverty Bay and two from Omarunui.

The top 16 teams went through to post-section play.

In the first round, July Hoepo-Williams (s) and Willy Murray of Kahutia beat clubmates Ray Young (s) and Bruce Ball; Murtha and Williams beat Vern Alder (s) and Mark Walker of Tolaga Bay; Andrew Ball (s) and Geoff Pinn of Gisborne beat Steve Berezowski (s) and Les Whittington of Poverty Bay; Ray Scott (s) and William Ryan of Omarunui beat Boon McIlroy (s) and Liam Pinn of Gisborne; Marcus Merrick (s) and Ben Elkington of Tolaga Bay beat Jeff Davis (s) and Bruce Gledhill of Poverty Bay; George Vaotuua (s) and Puna McRoberts of Kahutia beat clubmates Steve Jenkins (s) and Joe Wimutu; Adam McIlroy (s) and Kyle Pinn of Gisborne beat clubmates Tim Sherriff (s) and Chris Bunyan; and Trowell and Goldsbury beat Charlie Ure (s) and Paul Everett of Gisborne.

In the semifinal round, Murtha and Williams beat clubmates Scott and Ryan. Trowell and Goldsbury beat Merrick and Elkington 17-7.

The final was an interesting game with some beautiful shots from both pairs, but Trowell and Goldsbury won most ends on their way to a 20-9 victory.

Tolaga Bay pair Alder and Walker won the plate. They beat Poverty Bay's Davis and Gledhill 14-13 in the final.
